Morier Dam Instability Emergency
Date: 3 December 2023
Location: Quebec, Canada
Event
Quebec authorities issued an alert and evacuated more than 700 residents downstream from Morier Dam as a routine inspection had revealed that the dam's stability might be compromised due to internal erosion. Rapid emergency works had to be carried out to reinforce the dam against possible failure.
Value.Space’s assessment
Value.Space’s satellite-based survey of Morier Dam detected several deformation clusters on the dam structure that showed movement at least from May 2022. The assessment confirmed that the overall picture of Morier Dam before the emergency declaration was similar to past examples of dams that eventually failed.
